Wildflower planting

When the Weston under Penyard Parish Council undertook the Climate Change Survey last year, the area of greatest interest amongst residents was Wildflowers. These flowers are key to ensuring the survival of key pollinators such as bees – and hence the health of the planet. According to WWF, “Wildflowers provide bees, butterflies and other pollinators with food throughout the year. On a single day in summer, one acre of wildflower meadow can contain 3 million flowers, producing 1 kg of nectar sugar. That’s enough to support nearly 96,000 honey bees per day.” Therefore, with the support of the Council, the Wildflower project team has purchased a supply of perennial wildflower seeds – and we are keen to see these sown in gardens across the local area during September and October.

So if you are one of the 147 local residents that said that you wanted to be involved in this activity, or if this is the first that you have heard about this project and you want to join in, then just drop us an email to team@wcccg.org with your name, address and the size of the area that you want to sow, then we will get the right amount of seed to you. Advice on how to do this successfully here!

These seeds are free – the only thing that we ask in return is that you send us a photo of the area that you have sown next summer and again the following summer so that we can see the results. As well as sowing in local gardens, the team is also looking to sow on verges and in other open spaces in the area – and we are also talking with local farmers regarding incentives to planting wildflower meadows.
